In 1935, one of the first known competitive sporting events took place when a regatta for catboats and schooners was organised. In the 1970’s, the Olympic Committee was formed and the Islands took part in sailing at the Olympic Games, for the first time, in 1976. In 1995, the Island opened the national stadium, known as the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, which also allowed for redevelopment of school fields and funding of sports associations. In 2009, the notion of sports tourism was introduced, which lead to numerous sporting events, such as golf, tennis, beach volleyball, athletics and football being held in Cayman.
Today there is a diverse range of sport offerings and roughly 30 sports associations.
