Taxis are another form of public transportation in Grand Cayman, albeit an expensive option. You will find plenty of taxis at the airport, in front of the cruise ship terminals in George Town and parked at many of the major resorts along Seven Mile Beach.
One reliable taxi firm is A.A. Transportation Service, Tel: (345) 926 8294. A wonderful independent taxi driver that we recommend is Berris Barnett (Truly Blessed Taxi Service) and you can call him on (345) 517 2274 or email him on firstname.lastname@example.org.
In August 2019 a new digital fare calculator called CI:GO was launched by the Cayman Islands Government to help ensure consistent and transparent pricing for taxi fares – by setting standard prices for routes. This new initiative was launched following a petition signed by over 3,000 people calling for taxi meters to be used in Cayman’s taxis. Tourism businesses found that inconsistent and expensive taxi prices were impacting the visitor experience, with many being charged different rates for the same routes. The CI:GO app is available in the Google Play Store and the App Store and allows passengers to plug in their route, the number of passengers and see what the fare should cost in both US and Caymanian dollars. It also allows users to input the number of passengers and how many pieces of luggage a visitor has. While there has been a marginal increase in rates, there is no longer a surcharge for travelling at night. There is also a sliding scale of price increases for journeys of five passengers or more. Whilst this initiative brings consistent prices, it doesn’t attempt to fix the other outdated aspects of Cayman’s taxi services.
Flex, Cayman’s answer to Uber, however, is doing just that. Flex is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Alex Cowan and Rachel Smyth, and will allow customers to find drivers, track their ride, and pay through the app, amongst other things. With the majority of Cayman’s tourists coming from places that have Uber, the familiarity and sophistication of Flex is likely to make it a hit. Visit www.flex.ky for more information.
