Electric vehicles for personal use valued up to CI$29,000 can be imported duty free. In addition, hybrid vehicles, for personal use, valued under CI$29,000, will have a duty of 10% – substantially less that the average rate of 22%-42% for regular gas and diesel powered vehicles. Electric vehicles are available for purchase on Grand Cayman through certified local automotive dealers. Purchasing an electric vehicle through a local automotive dealer ensures you as the vehicle owner have proper warranty coverage as well as having access to certified technicians and parts for manufacturer-recommended maintenance. In addition to certified maintenance service, local automotive dealers can also seamlessly assist electric vehicle owners with the proper recycling of end of life battery components. Almost all of the major global electric vehicle brands are available in the Cayman Islands through a local automotive dealer.

Most electric vehicles, on average, can be driven for 200 miles on a single charge. The Island’s small area and flat topography makes it an ideal location for electric vehicles and Level 2 charging (as opposed to high voltage DC fast charging). One hour of recharging on a Level 2 (240 Volt) electric vehicle charger can add as much as 30 miles of distance to the electric vehicle.

CUC has already begun deploying networked (i.e., remotely managed and operated) charging stations, you can see the list of locations below. Users can charge their vehicles at these stations and pay through a downloadable phone app. The goal of this project is to install an Island-wide network of publicly-accessible electric vehicle charging at commercial, tourism and multi-unit residential properties for CUC’s customers.
