Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is the delivery of oxygen at a pressure greater than normal (greater than 100kPa) so that a higher level of oxygen can be dissolved in the patient's blood plasma. This takes place within a treatment chamber.
It is the only treatment available for decompression illness, a condition that can develop while scuba diving. Divers with suspected decompression illness need urgent access to HBOT.
Cayman’s only Recompression Chamber is located at the Cayman Islands Hospital and is readily available 24 hours a day, every day of the year on an on-call basis.
It also has some other applications in treating a range of injuries and has shown significant health benefits. Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy administers 95% oxygen in a low pressured chamber to increase the oxygen supply to your cells. It supports faster healing from injuries and sprains, assists with preconditioning for sports performance and enhances sport recovery.
