About Anthony S. Eden Hospital

The recently renamed Anthony S. Eden Hospital, formerly the George Town Hospital, is the flagship facility of The Health Services Authority (HSA), which is a Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited organisation and the premier healthcare provider in the Cayman Islands.

As the largest and longest-standing healthcare provider in the Cayman Islands, the HSA provides the most comprehensive healthcare services in Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman.

Grand Cayman residents can access care through various locations including:

Anthony S. Eden Hospital (Main HSA Facility)

The George Town Hospital location is a 127-bed facility and offers 24-hour accident and emergency services, ambulance services, an urgent care clinic, a paediatric clinic and ward, a women’s health clinic, full maternity services, and NICU, radiology, behavioral health services, including Alex’s Place (an Adolescent Mental Health Hub), a full-service pharmacy, laboratory services including a forensic unit and many diagnostic and specialist services.

Diagnostic services include:  mammography, computerised tomography (CT Scan), laboratory services, a DNA forensic unit, a molecular biology laboratory, and many other facilities that can be expected in a modern healthcare setting.

Specialist services include:  gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics, surgery, internal medicine, dentistry, dermatology, haematology, oncology, nutrition, gastroenterology, interventional radiology, ophthalmology and orthopaedics.

Other services include:  general practice clinic, public health and immunisations, full-service outpatient pharmacy, chiropractic, cardiology, urology, behavioural health services, otorhinolaryngology, and chronic pain management.

Accident and Emergency

Emergency care can be accessed through HSA’s Accident and Emergency Ambulance Bay. The A&E department boasts a dedicated team of 15 experienced emergency medical doctors, ensuring you receive the highest level of attention and expertise in critical times.

Behavioural Health Department (Mental Health)

HSA’s Behavioural Health Department offers the most integrated and largest range of inpatient and outpatient mental health services in the Cayman Islands. The HSA’s Behavioural Health Department is located at 150 Smith Road, Smith Road Medical Center (3rd Floor) George Town.

The team of experts includes specialists in psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, psychology, ABA/behaviour therapy, mental health nurses, clinical social workers, and other clinicians who are trained to help children, adolescents, adults, and older adults with complex mental health needs.

Specialist services include 24-hour patient emergency care at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital, outpatient therapy, acute inpatient care, consultation and liaison services, community outreach and education, and research. Current specialties include therapy for anxiety, trauma, and depression; assessment and acute intervention for chronic cases; forensic assessments; neuropsychology and psychiatric consultation and medication management.

Clinical Dietary & Nutrition

The HSA recognises the importance of diet and nutrition in achieving optimal health. Our team of clinical dietary and nutrition experts (registered dietitians/nutritionists) and nutritionists, work closely with individuals to develop personalised plans that address their specific nutritional needs and health goals.

Services include: personalised nutrition assessment, medical nutrition therapy, nutritional counselling, ongoing support and monitoring, and participation in various multidisciplinary education programmes. Some common conditions that can benefit from these services include obesity, diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic kidney disease, women’s health, and paediatrics/adolescents.

Critical Care Unit

HSA Critical Care Unit (CCU) provides exceptional care for seriously ill patients in need of specialised treatment. The eight-bed unit is specifically designed to meet the complex needs of cardiac, respiratory, surgical, renal and trauma patients.

Dental Clinics

The HSA provides dental services intending to ensure that all Caymanians and residents can maintain a healthy mouth for life. This is achieved by preventing any preventable dental problems and efficiently distributing treatment resources to contain any remaining disease or deformity.

The main dental clinic is at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital. HSA dental services are also available at Merren’s Dental Clinic and all district health centres.

Dialysis

HSA is the primary provider of dialysis services in the Cayman Islands with a spacious Dialysis Unit at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital– the largest on the Islands.

The Dialysis Unit at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital can accommodate up to 13 dialysis patients at one time and dialyze 33 to 39 patients per day, on average. There is also a dialysis chair available at the Faith Hospital in Cayman Brac for our Sister Islands residents and visitors.

The Dialysis Unit at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital is open 6 days a week: Mondays to Saturdays and public holidays from 7am to midnight.

Dialysis service at the Faith Hospital is provided upon request and dependent on availability.

Diabetes Education Clinic

A Diabetes Education Clinic is available at the General Practice Clinic at Smith Road Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 5 pm in half-hour sessions. 

Persons are empowered to manage diabetes through lifestyle modification (diet and exercise), medication adherence, prevention of complications, and blood glucose monitoring.

Forensic Science Laboratory

The Cayman Islands Forensic Science Laboratory is an established multifunctional, state-of-the-art laboratory, operated by the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority in Grand Cayman. It offers expertise in many areas, including forensic biology and DNA testing, DNA databasing services, DNA paternity testing, forensic toxicology testing, forensic drug analysis, pathology, and forensic criminalistics testing in selected areas.

Geriatrics

Dedicated to the specialized care and treatment of patients 60 years and over, the HSA offers Geriatric medical care at the Specialist Clinic at Smith Road Medical Centre.

Services include: assessment, chronic disease and medication management, fall prevention and mobility enhancement, cognitive and memory care, palliative and end-of-life care, mental health services, and health promotion and preventive care.

Laboratory (Phlebotomy) Services

The world-class Pathology Laboratories in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac serve most of the population of the Cayman Islands. They are operated by a highly qualified and committed team of specialists and support staff. We conduct a wide variety of tests including microbiology (bacteriology, parasitology, and virology), histology, cytology, haematology, clinical chemistry and immunohaematology.

The Phlebotomy service at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital operates Monday to Friday 7am to 6.30pm and on Saturday from 7am to 12.30pm

We also offer on-site phlebotomy services at the Smith Road Medical Centre, 2nd Floor Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm.

Lions Eye Clinic

The eye care team offers a comprehensive range of medical and surgical ophthalmic services at the Lions Eye Clinic at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital.

They perform a full range of eye care services including diagnosis and treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, corneal conditions, pterygium, paediatric eye care, and laser procedures

Women’s Health

Maternity

The Anthony S. Eden Hospital offers three single delivery suites, and eight maternity rooms with ensuite facilities (three single and five double rooms) and is home to the only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) on the Island. It can care for up to six newborns who may be premature or need special observation. The hospital offers antepartum care, labour and delivery, post-partum, and neonatal care, including normal births, multiple births, breech, vacuum, forceps, and caesarean section deliveries.

The Women’s Health Clinic at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital is devoted exclusively to serving the healthcare needs of women at all stages of life. Our team provides specialised OB/GYN care for every phase of your life and health journey.

Urgent Care

HSA Urgent Care Clinic is Voted Gold for the Best of the Cayman Islands 2023.

If you have a non-life-threatening condition, minor illness or injuries that require urgent medical attention visit the Urgent Care ‘Walk-in’ Clinic located in the Anthony S. Eden Hospital main entrance.

Open seven (7) days a week (no appointments necessary)

The Urgent Care Clinic is an alternative to the General Practice Clinic, where an appointment is required, and the Accident and Emergency Department, which should be used for emergencies only. It provides patients with immediate and cost-effective access to medical care from our expert team of nurses and doctors for common and non-emergent illnesses and injuries including, but not limited to:

  • Cold, cough, and flu symptoms, viral infections
  • Minor injuries such as mild sprains and cuts
  • Diarrhea
  • Earache
  • Insect bites and stings – including tick bites
  • Minor burns

Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiology is a specialised medical discipline that focuses on the administration of anesthesia and the management of pain during surgical procedures.

Dedicated to the specialized care and treatment of patients 60 years and over, the HSA offers Geriatric medical care at the Specialist Clinic at Smith Road Medical Centre.

Services include assessment, chronic disease and medication management, fall prevention and mobility enhancement, cognitive and memory care, palliative and end-of-life care, mental health services, and health promotion and preventive care.

General Practice Clinic

The Health Services Authority offers a wide range of general family health services in a modern and welcoming environment. The clinic is staffed with trained physicians who can provide medical care for non-emergent conditions, preventive healthcare check-ups, medicals for insurance or employment purposes, and routine care for chronic diseases. The clinic provides routine care for chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), asthma, muscle and joint problems, and routine check-ups including medical exams, pap smears, prescription refills, laboratory tests, and dressing changes (Saturday clinic).

Services offered: diagnosis, investigation, and treatment of non-life-threatening illnesses.

Laboratory (Phlebotomy) Services

The world-class Pathology Laboratories in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac serve most of the population of the Cayman Islands. They are operated by a highly qualified and committed team of specialists and support staff. They conduct a wide variety of tests including microbiology (bacteriology, parasitology, and virology), histology, cytology, haematology, clinical chemistry and immunohaematology.

The Phlebotomy service at the Anthony S. Eden Hospital operates Monday to Friday 7am to 6.30pm and on Saturday from 7am to 12.30pm

They also offer on-site phlebotomy services at the Smith Road Medical Centre, 2nd Floor Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm

Neurology

To promote optimal brain and nervous system health, the Health Services Authority (HSA) offers comprehensive neurology services, including advanced diagnostics and treatment options.

  • Computed Tomography (CT) Scan
  • Electromyography (EMG) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)
  • Blood test
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Other tests including MRI and PET Scan may be required to diagnose and monitor various neurological conditions. These services can be used and offered by third party providers on island.

Sports & Exercise Medicine (SEM) Clinic

Whether you’re an elite athlete or exercise enthusiast, introducing sports medicine into your health care regimen can be a real game-changer.

The Sports Medicine Clinic will be able to diagnose and treat injuries including tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfers' elbow, arthritis, knee bursitis, rotator cuff tears, ligament tears (ACL, PCL), achilles tendon tear, ankle instability and a range of fractures, sprains and strains.
