Early Caymanians supplemented the sea’s bounty by subsistence farming or backyard farming. While subsistence, and organic farming in particular, have experienced a resurgence, the Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with the Agricultural Society, have been running the Agriculture Show for over 50 years.
The show is a widely anticipated annual family event and provides farmers with an opportunity to sell their home-grown produce and display their livestock. In addition to the wide selection of local produce and authentic food which is available for sale, there are also lots of handmade crafts for sale, and children can participate in the many kid-friendly activities such as games, pageants, horseback riding and the petting zoo.
Now in its 53rd year, the Agricultural Show is a testament to the love that the people of these Islands have for farming and looking after their land.
Held every Ash Wednesday, which is also always a public holiday, it is not to be missed! Tip: go early avoid the heat and the traffic.
