About Sand Cay Boat Masters by Al Monro
Sand Cay Boat Masters is an International Yacht Training Worldwide (IYT) authorized school run by Alastair Monro who has over 25 years of professional yachting experience and over 10 years instructing. Sand Cay Boat Masters is authorised to instruct recreational courses here in the Cayman Islands and those courses include:
1) VHF Marine Communications Master SRC,
2) Small Power Boat & Rib Master
3) International Crew (Sail)
4) International Bareboat Skipper Sai
5) International Certificate of Competence 24m Sail/10m power
The Small Power Boat & Rib Master course is a 2 day course costing CI$400 per person with a minimum of two students. The course covers all the basics of boating, from safety and collision regulations to rope work and how to dock your boat like a pro. The practical part of the course is taught on a Wellcraft 21’ centre console boat.
The International Bareboat Skipper course is a one week course with 4 nights of evening classes for the theory followed by 2 days of practical on a CS 36’ sailboat. It is not an entry level course as you should have 200 miles on the water experience and you will need to do the VHF Marine Communications also if you don’t have that certification already. This course certification is the minimum required to apply for the International Certificate of Competence which is the certificate required to charter boats of up to 24m in many places abroad.
This has been a popular course and they try to be as flexible as possible with the dates and timing to accommodate everyone’s schedules. The course costs CI$1900 per student and there is a 5 person maximum, 4 minimum for the practical and 8 maximum for the theory.
