Darkness to Light is a child sexual abuse prevention programme for adults aimed at empowering individuals and communities to prevent child sexual abuse.
Stewards of Children is an evidence-based programme that informs and teaches adults on how to protect the children in their care and community.
The Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) offer two child
protection trainings in partnership with Darkness to Light:
Each person must register separately.
1. Stewards of Children
• Available as both virtual (self-led) and in-person training. {Both trainings
are the same}
• In-Person Registration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSca89qED2TcIQympUEiCmrdV2xjn3_d6RuPW3jecdD-9SruvA/viewform?usp=pp_url
• Virtual Registration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe4W8NddLBtMrFhcBEvuT65nZrQooM8Y3ZgwaNDGEMxylFBHg/viewform?usp=pp_url
2. Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect
• Offered virtually (self-led).

Once registered,
participants will receive an email with course access instructions within 24–48
working hours. You will receive a certificate after successful completion.
These trainings are free. If you are ever prompted to make a
payment, please stop and email CIRC immediately at childprotection@redcross.org.ky.
A Ministry of Education approved training must be done before anyone who works in an educational institution can start work. This only needs to be done once but a refresher course is recommended every four years.
Darkness to Light
Two modules are required for anyone working with children, and both can be done online: i) Stewards of Children and ii) Recognising Child Abuse and Neglect. You can contact the Cayman Islands Red Cross on childprotection@redcross.org.ky to learn about how to sign up for the courses.
Other alternative training courses can be used but they must be approved by the Ministry of Education and Training. Approved courses include Second Step’s ‘Child Protection Unit’ Module 2, NSPCC’s ‘Introduction to safeguarding and child protection’ training and EduCare’s ‘Child Protection Course’. Other courses can be submitted to the Ministry for review.
Reporting
In an education institution a staff
member would follow that institutions’ abuse and neglect reporting
policy. The institution would often have two people assigned as the
‘Child Protection Officer’, or the ‘Designated Safeguarding Lead’ and
this person would fill out the MASH form. MASH stands for Multi Agency
Safeguarding Hub and it is made up of the DCFS (Department of Children
and Family Services) plus the Family Support Unit of the Police. This
form then gets emailed to MASH@gov.ky
and the report is escalated. All schools and early childhood centres
should have the forms but they are also available online or can be
requested from the MASH.
If you witness abusive behavior outside of an educational institution
it is recommended that you call MASH, or after hours, the police. If a
parent has a concern, they can contact MASH directly on tel: (345)
945-0545.
