About Cayman Islands Intellectual Property Office (CIIPO)
The Cayman Islands Intellectual Property Office (CIIPO) is a division of the Cayman Islands Government’s Ministry of Financial Services and Commerce (MFSC) and is responsible for maintaining and bolstering the Intellectual Property (IP) protection framework and administering all intellectual property rights in the Cayman Islands, including trade marks, patents and copyright.
The Cayman Islands Government has modernised the country’s intellectual property (IP) laws to better protect the works of persons involved in creative and business endeavours. This has also improved the local commerce framework. Intellectual property protection was significantly updated with the commencement of, amongst other things, the Design Rights Registration Act (2016), the Trade Marks Act (2016) and the Copyright (Cayman Islands) Order (2015). These important changes allow for trade mark applications to be made directly with CIIPO without having to first register in the UK or the EU.
In 2023 CIIPO received 565 new trade mark applications. In addition to trade marks, there are 7,900 entries in the Register, including patents and designs.
