About Caribbean Utilities Company Ltd. (CUC)
Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd., known locally as CUC, commenced operations as the only public electric utility in Grand Cayman, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, in May 1966. The Company has been through many challenging and exciting periods but has kept pace with Grand Cayman's rapid development for over 57 years. Today they are considered one of the most reliable and efficient power companies in the Caribbean. The Company currently has an installed generating capacity of 166 megawatts (MW), and a record peak load of 124.1 MW on July 18, 2023. The Company’s 257 employees are committed to providing a safe and reliable electricity supply to over 33,000 customers.
The company relies upon diesel generation to produce electricity for Grand Cayman; however, CUC has developed plans that outline the future of energy on Grand Cayman that include the transitioning from a fossil- centric energy portfolio to clean, green, renewable energy technologies. The Company has multiple energy programmes for customers to interconnect renewable energy systems to the grid. The Consumer-Owned Renewable Energy (CORE) Programme is a net billing arrangement whereby 100% of the customer’s renewable energy production is sold to CUC and credited to the customer’s bill. The Distributed Energy Resource (DER) programme allows participating customers to self-consume the energy that their produce from their renewable energy systems.
