Matthew Taber is a professional independent director based in the Cayman Islands. With over two decades of legal and governance experience, he serves on the boards of traditional investment funds, investment managers, and digital asset projects, bringing a unique blend of expertise across both established and emerging financial markets.
Between 2015 and 2025, Matt was a partner at Harneys in the Cayman Islands, where he led the firm’s digital assets practice and advised on the formation and operation of funds across asset classes ranging from traditional hedge and private equity strategies to crypto asset funds and decentralised structures. Earlier in his career, he practised at leading Cayman Islands law firms, having trained in London in capital markets and M&A. This progression gives him a nuanced understanding of regulatory, transactional, and governance issues across the full fund lifecycle. As a former practising lawyer, Matt brings legal precision and strategic insight to boardrooms, complementing the technical expertise of his co-directors. He has contributed to the development of Cayman’s digital asset frameworks, including the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act and related AML regulations, and has advised on governance for foundations, DAOs, and token-based ecosystems. He speaks regularly at industry events and participates in regulatory consultations and round tables on fund governance and innovation. Matt is admitted as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands and as a solicitor in England and Wales (non-practising). He is registered as a director with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, a committee member of AIMA Cayman, and was a founding member and original secretary of the Blockchain Association of the Cayman Islands.
