An oncologist deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The oncologist will be the doctor who manages a person's care and treatment once he or she is diagnosed with cancer. The field of oncology has three major areas: medical, surgical, and radiation.
The oncologist will discuss possible treatments with the patient such as lumpectomy or more serious surgery, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy or radiation.
