Bariatric surgery is performed on those who are suffering from obesity. It involves separating a portion of the stomach with a gastric band to effectively reduce the size of the stomach and therefore restrict its intake.
This surgery is not for general weight loss of a few pounds, but rather is recommended for people with a Body Mass Index of at least 40, or those who have BMI of 35 along with another serious condition such as diabetes. See our Dieticians page for help with healthy eating habits.
